Determining the correct freight class for your LTL shipments may seem like a daunting task especially when your materials fall into various classes and your loads of various sizes. Luckily customers using Advance Ship should rarely need to think about this. But in case you still have a need to either manually determine a freight class or for some inconceivable reason you want to walk through the exercise we can help you there.

There are various tools that expose the Advance Ship functionality and you can use to perform the task on your own.

Firstly did you know you have a class determination calculator built right in. Sure enough lets see what we can do there. (Note there are many calculators also on the internet but this one is so much prettier 🙂

Ok via the Advance Ship menu select the Freight class calculator.

menufrtclasscalc

Enter your values (be patient Ill show you an even handier way shortly).

You’ll need your

  • NMFC Item number
  • Weight
    Length
    Width
    Height

CalcfrtClass

Press OK and the calculator will display the freight class determined, volume and the NMFC subcode if applicable . Ok nifty right? but not that exciting. But the next tool will blow you away, ok maybe not blow you away but you get it.

From the Advance Ship menu select the Order based freight class (I didn’t name it, just saying)

menufrtorderinquiry

Here enter a delivery number or shipment number and select execute.

order based freight inquiry

This nifty tool determines the freight class based on the materials, handling units etc in your delivery or shipment, it uses all the data already present in your document to return the freight class or classes determined. An important tip is that this tool is basically the same code executed when Advance Ship generates your Bill of lading.

Ok that’s your handy tip for today. If you have questions drop us a note.
