National Motor Freight Classification
Developed in 1936, the NMFC is a voluntary standard created by the motor carrier industry to meet federal requirements for freight classification. It is managed by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) and provides a standardized method for categorizing freight based on its characteristics.
For customers, it’s best to determine the NMFC code for your products when setting up the material master record in SAP, as this classification typically remains static. In our example, we’ll use smoke alarms with an NMFC code of 61550, provided by the manufacturer.
