Do we really need SAP for the iPhone?
March 19th, 2009 by PhilLast week SAP announced an agreement with Sybase that will allow SAP to run on a iPhone or blackberry. My gut tells me that this is a non-event as SAP already had several options to address the devices mentioned, albeit the announcement seemed to focus attention on the iPhone. Is this more of a jump on the bandwagon and pick up some press by mentioning the iPhone? What does this mean to a typical SAP enterprise? Of course details of what the SAP/Sybase agreement will deliver are sketchy but honestly I think the best thing for SAP to do at this point is to pick a preferred method (ITSmobile, Webdynpro mobile, SAP Mobile) (for more details on what is available to mobilize SAP see our whitepaper) and focus on improving what is already available.
I really doubt most SAP enterprises will be deploying iPhones to their users anytime soon and implementing a solution for SAP because it addresses the iPhone is probably not what most CIO’s would commit resources and money to. Of course this maybe different important if your company is addressing an eCommerce app specifically to the consumer market which will include iPhones.
my two cents.
