I am very cognizant about security issues I would say that I border on the paranoid but I believe that anyone that is in IT and ignores security either personal or at work is foolhardy. I am struck on a regular basis how little thought people give to openly providing information and how this total lack of disregard for security opens the doors to hacks and what is scarier is that more and more these days legitimate businesses are also extracting your private information. As you may have heard SAP has been making a lot of noise lately with their improved database technology, this was described in Hasso Plattner’s keynote address for Sapphire and in subsequent new articles there is a lot of buzz about how this finally will supplant Oracle as the DB leader. There has been a lot of buzz lately about Siemens decision to stop SAP maintenance and I think also a lot of confusion and misinformation. I have had some conversations with two of our clients over the past week on what some of this means so I thought I would throw myself out on a limb and try and explain some of what is being discussed and what it means. Note that Siemens intentions have not been confirmed, the initial buzz was based on one website article in Germany which as I understood was mis translated, so it is not confirmed that Siemens has terminated maintenance only that they are considering it.
